The playing surface of the glockenspiel contains 13 steel note bars. These are made to withstand daily use in educational environments. A wooden base provides a solid support for playing. The alto glockenspiel covers diatonic notes (white piano keys) C52-A73. This allows the user to perform in the C major key. One B flat and two F sharp bars are also included which, when substituted, allow the performer to play in G and F major.

The steel note bars produce a charming bell sound at a comfortable volume, allowing the user to play for long periods without ear fatigue. An included pair of beaters mean that you can get straight into making melodies. Percussion Plus also make other glockenspiels covering a higher C diatonic scale.
