Key Features
The Yamaha NU1XA AvantGrand Hybrid Digital Piano is designed for pianists seeking authentic grand piano feel at home. It blends a real upright piano action with advanced digital sound technologies, giving you a responsive playing experience that closely reflects an acoustic instrument. Wooden keys and a specialised upright mechanism translate subtle finger movements into accurate hammer motion, helping techniques such as trills and repeated notes feel natural.
Yamaha’s Articulation Sensor System carefully tracks both hammer and key movement, capturing fine performance details as you play. Combined with Virtual Resonance Modelling, the instrument recreates the complex resonances of strings and soundboard that shape a grand piano’s character. You can also switch between Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano voices, offering two distinct tonal personalities in one instrument — bright and powerful or warm and lyrical. Built-in Bluetooth allows simple connection to smart devices, giving you convenient control through compatible apps.

The NU1XA uses a specialised upright piano action that mirrors the mechanical behaviour of an acoustic instrument. When you press a key, the movement is transferred directly to a hammer mechanism, providing the same responsive feedback experienced on a traditional piano. Wooden keys contribute to the solid, familiar feel many pianists expect when practising or performing. This design also supports more advanced techniques such as trills, repeated notes, and delicate phrasing. The result is a digital instrument that feels reassuringly close to an acoustic piano, helping you develop accurate playing habits and expressive control.
Yamaha’s Articulation Sensor System measures both key and hammer movement using non-contact electromagnetic sensors. This dual-sensor design continuously tracks how each key is pressed and released, allowing the piano to respond to subtle variations in your playing. The system also detects the exact moment a sound stops, helping reproduce nuanced articulation and dynamic changes. Whether you’re shaping soft passages or emphasising stronger accents, the instrument reacts accurately to your touch. Together with Yamaha’s processing algorithms, the sensors translate your performance into sound with impressive clarity and precision.
The NU1XA includes carefully captured samples from two respected concert grand pianos. Yamaha’s CFX offers a wide dynamic range with clear highs and powerful bass, making it well suited to expressive modern repertoire. The Bösendorfer Imperial voice provides a contrasting tonal character with warmth and rich colour often associated with Viennese instruments. Having both voices available allows you to choose the sound that suits your music or personal preference. The piano also includes additional voices, including historic fortepiano sounds inspired by instruments used during the 18th and 19th centuries.
To recreate the immersive presence of an acoustic instrument, the NU1XA uses Yamaha’s Virtual Resonance Modelling alongside a carefully designed speaker system. VRM simulates sympathetic vibrations between strings and the soundboard, adding natural harmonic detail based on your keystrokes and pedalling. The speaker system features upward-facing woofers and specially designed tweeters that project sound throughout the instrument and into the room. This combination creates a spacious, layered sound field that responds dynamically as you play. It helps the piano feel lively and expressive whether you are practising quietly or performing with greater intensity.
