Connect instruments to balanced equipment
The PDI Pro gives you a simple way to connect unbalanced instruments and other audio sources to equipment with balanced inputs. Plug your source into the 6.35mm TS input, then use the three-pin XLR output to feed a mixer, audio interface, or another compatible balanced device. With a 1M Ohm input impedance and 600 Ohm balanced output impedance, the passive transformer-based circuit handles the conversion without requiring powered electronics. Its specified 10Hz–40kHz frequency response, within ±0.5dB, also covers a wide frequency range for instrument and audio signals.
Handle instrument and amplified signals
A dedicated input source switch makes the PDI Pro suitable for different signal types. Select Instrument when connecting guitars, keyboards, and other instrument-level equipment, or choose Amp Out when taking a signal from an instrument amplifier's amplified output. For hotter signals, the switchable 20dB pad provides attenuation, useful when the balanced output is becoming distorted or overloaded. When using Amp Out, check whether your amplifier requires a speaker load. If it does, you can connect the required speaker cabinet through the PDI Pro's THRU output while using this setting.
Reduce unwanted hum and control polarity
Ground loops can introduce distracting hum or buzz when several pieces of audio equipment are connected together. The PDI Pro includes a ground lift switch that disconnects the output ground connection, giving you a practical way to address this problem when it occurs. You also get switchable phase control at the XLR output. Leave the switch in its standard position to maintain the original polarity, or select the Ø setting to invert the output by 180°. Both controls affect the balanced XLR output only, so they won't alter equipment connected through the THRU socket.
Split your signal with the Thru output
The 6.35mm TS THRU connection passes the incoming signal directly to another piece of audio equipment. This lets you keep an existing signal path while sending a balanced feed through the PDI Pro's XLR output at the same time. For example, you can connect an electric guitar to the input, route the THRU signal to a guitar amplifier, and send the balanced output to a mixer. The manual also shows a keyboard setup where the THRU connection feeds a recorder while the XLR output runs to a mixer, giving you flexible routing for recording and performance setups.
